Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Easy to Upgrade to Active Sway Control

Easily upgrade this weight distribution hitch with the Reese Strait-Line dual-cam sway control

    • This system doesn't control sway out of the box - but you can remedy that later on
    • The bars are specifically made to work with Reese's premium Strait-Line sway control system
      • Just add on the dual cams and get better control when cornering, swerving, and dealing with wind
      • Great sway control, but can get pretty noisy when you make turns
    • For a more economical option, you can add a bar-style friction sway control to either side of your trailer (or both sides, if you have a really long trailer)
      • Uses friction to force your trailer back in line when it gets pushed off course
      • Has to be removed at times (e.g. in the rain or when you're backing up), but its adjustable tension is a plus

Note: Neither of these sway control systems will work with surge-type actuators.

People often conflate sway control with weight distribution. It's understandable because most weight distribution systems on the market today do solve issues with sway.

This system will give you weight distribution only. It doesn't have any sway control built in. But if you find that you need sway control later, it's super-easy to upgrade to Reese's Strait-Line sway control system by adding on the dual-cam brackets (RP26002 - sold separately).

Get the Full Setup: If sway control is something you need right now to keep your trailer from getting squirrelly, take a look at RP66074 for a complete Strait-Line system.

A view of a Reese Strait-Line weight distribution system shows the flexing of the bars under weight.

Alternatively, you can add a friction sway bar (sold separately) for a little more reinforcement. This option allows you to easily dial in the amount of tension with the turn of a handle. This adjustability is nice (even if it takes you a few trips to get it just right), but it doesn't play well with surge-type actuators (neither does the Strait-Line dual cam system), and it will have to be removed when backing up any time you tow on wet or slippery roads.

    Simple Setup with Serrated Washers

A top-down view of the Reese weight distribution hitch shows the design of the head and serrated washer feature

    • No more piling on washers
    • Exterior, serrated washers let you adjust the head without having to take everything apart

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on this system make adjusting the tilt of the weight distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust, and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

    • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
    • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
    • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
    • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
    • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

    • Think "Goldilocks"
      • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
      • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
    • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

Thanks for the great service, I was very surprised how fast my hitch got to me, Three days WOW. Thanks for the great service and i will be doing bussiness with you again.

Received product before the tracking info. was available. Two days..WOW.. The price match was more than I asked for. Just wanted them to meet the competition, not beat them up!! If ETrailer has it, I'm a customer for life.

Product is exactly as described. We ended up not being able to use the trunnion bars because the trailer we rented had the propane tanks mounted such that they prevented us from attaching the bars. But we ultimately didn't need them since the trailer was a light weight one. I'm pleased to have this product since we don' t know what we might tow in the future. I like that it will also be easy to add the Reese sway controllers in the future if needed. I know comments are supposed to be about the product itself, but I have to say the best part of buying it was the fantastic & knowledgeable customer service that Etrailer provided in helping me choose the best product for my needs ( I ordered by phone).

I'm having problems with finding the "sweet-spot" to manage trailer sway. My tow vehicle is the 2021 Ford Expidition Platinum with HD Towing. My trailer is the 2021 Lance 2075 with a CAT Scale weight of 5800# ÷/- 50# loaded, & tongue wt. between 800# & 875# based on Etrailer trailer jack attached. My trailer hitch height level is 24 inches to top of coupler. I've recently modified my hitch ball setup to a top of ball height of 25-1/4 inch to top of ball, & have experienced some sway improvement but not the level of control expected. At speeds above 50 mph I feel passing vehicle moving the trailer with slight sway. At speeds above 55 mph to 60 mph, there is moderate sway.

My wt. distribution is at the 4th or 5th link, 3 or 4 links free. My steer axel is good at these settings. I find that as I add more torsion on my 800# wt. distribution trunnion bars, my tongue wt. drops signicantly.

Previously, I towed with the Hensley hitch with no sway issues, until I swerved left to avoid a full truck wheel on I20 traveling slightly above 60 mph. When the strut bolts sheared I nearly lost control due to major sway. After that event, I installed the Reese Hitch. I'm still looking for a reliable hitch to manage my travel sway issues.

After spending two hours setting this up I was disappointed to find that I need a different hitch bar. as the supplied one did not drop enough for me to achieve a level trailer. Now I have to order another hitch bar at $ 140.

It would have been nice to know ahead of time that you should measure down from the top of your receiver box to the approx trailer coupler height ( w leveled trailer) to determine if you have sufficient drop or rise. I now have an extra hitch bar I do not need.

    by:

The combo of the Reese sway control and the weight distribution hitch is an excellent combo. I pull a 22' trailer with a 2020 Ford Ranger and I couldn't be more pleased with the performance of these combined systems

    by:

Excellent gear for towing a heavy boat. Well made. Used with the Reese Pole-Tongue Adapter.

Called talked to katie D she kept me on the phone until I was sure that product was for me.From that point on all the way to delivery it was a perfect transaction.

    • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Trailer with Loaded Tongue Weight of 550 lbs
You asked a lot of great questions, but let's first start with picking out the correct system based on the loaded tongue weight you listed. Keep in mind that the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle needs to be counted as tongue weight too. That being said, the weight of the WD system does not count as tongue weight. The Reese system part # RP66153 has a tongue weight range of 400 lbs to 800 lbs and would work well for you. Also the reason I recommended it is because...

I'd recommend the next higher Strait Line part # RP66083 which has a tongue weight range of 400-800 lbs. Your dry tongue weight of 560 lbs is about at the top of the range of the # RP66082 which is 200-600. By the time your trailer would be loaded you'd be over the capacity and the system would be basically ineffective. Ideally you want the loaded tongue weight of the towing setup to fall right into the middle of the range of the system. Keep in mind that the weight of any cargo behind...

The installation instrucutions of many of the weight distribution systems will tell you how far back on the trailer frame the lift brackets would attach. For instance, with the Curt # 17301, the bracket would attach approximately 30 inches rearward of the trailer ball center line.
